No one is looking, just Change

6 min read

Human life is valuable in the fact that it can change. But it has been seen as an enemy of society. When you change, the people around you shift, and the environment around you can no longer recognize you.

It genuinely sucks to be treated as someone you were 1 and a half years ago. The physical realm, on the other hand, supports this analogy. If you murdered someone 5 years ago and after that you stopped killing people, you'll still be in custody and in jail shortly after. But this is not how we approach mental change or a mindset shift.

I had seen something in the media that one of my lecturers was saying:

"You have aced your 5th Grade Board exam, you have aced your 8th Grade Board exam, and you have lastly aced your 10th Grade Board exam. You have given hope to your family that you can ace the next board exam too; they hope that you'll become an Engineer/a Doctor. You have no right to break that hope."

That speech was tailored to the kind of people who'd be inspired. But what's wrong with changing? I find it useless to sit down and study. What's wrong with that? Instead, I am continuing with the things that are valuable to me despite what my parents think. What's wrong with this thing?

You can change anytime, from the life you had, from the identity you had. And that change is something you shouldn't postpone if you know that you could've been in a better place now.

Studying isn't bad after all. We figure out who is in charge by competing with people. That's how we form a government in a country. But, you see all the misfits in Silicon Valley who are even growing stronger than any government?

When someone changes, they're seen as someone who's portraying themselves as great.

People try to bring them down. By doing that, people are just being people.

I remember an incident with my friend Anirban where we were out walking miles after miles. I said to him, "Do you feel like we are not who we are, and we are portraying ourselves as great? Because I often remember how I used to play games and continue on with my packed-up rabbit habits. It makes me question how I came here."

My mother was once calling him, asking about the condition of my academic life. My mother continued on to the topic that I used to wake up at 4 a.m. to study some months ago, and now I no longer do that.

He replied, "Is he still the same person you're referring to?"

In order to change, you don't have to take bold steps and get it all done in one day. It just refers to an identity shift. It's just that you don't find it fun anymore to hang around with people, you don't find it fun anymore to play games or use social media. When you first admit that you have to change, then you'll change.

All of life's inherent change comes with examining your life. Examining your life means analyzing your life to a certain extent, where you know what you are doing and why you are doing that.

If you show the courage that has been mentioned in the book, you can get along pretty well.

Every problem is an identity problem, and identity problems begin with knowledge problems.

To change is to take a break. Take a break from everything, isolate yourself with thoughts, worries, papers, and pens. Sit alone and analyze.

I have seen the most accountable people around me who were just as easy to understand as I was 1 and a half years ago. If you met them back then, and if you meet them now, they are completely different people. Something might have hit them so bad that they had to change the whole game they play.

Eventually, you cannot help but change. It turns into a game of two options:

  1. You have to disappoint yourself.

  2. You have to disappoint others.

And I'll always choose the latter one.
